Tell us about yourself? What should we know about you?

I’m 54 years old and have lived on the Gold Coast with my husband for over 21 years. I have a counseling degree and my passion is for people to be empowered to live successful healthy lives, not just physically, but also mentally, emotionally, socially and spiritually.

Describe your life before you started your health and fitness journey?

I have always endeavoured to live a healthy life with a balanced diet and exercise, but juggling children and business commitments meat that I didn’t always find the time to exercise. I never really had an issue with my weight until about the age of 45 when I started to gradually gain weight, some of it due to increased stress but also I believe due to hormonal changes in my body. In 2006 I started to eat for comfort. I went from 65kg to 86 kg over a period of 3 years and wasn’t happy with myself.

What was your turning point/what prompted your desire to change your life?

At the beginning of 2009 I was 86kg, overweight and unhealthy. I felt uncomfortable and lethargic. I decided that I needed to make some changes and to be disciplined with my eating and start a healthy, balanced diet. I joined joined Jetts Nerang to lose 18kg. I’ve realized that if I want to live a long and healthy life I need to treat my body right.

How different do you feel now compared to then?

I feel much more energetic, less stressed and all in all feel good about myself. Once I had my physical energy back, I also felt much clearer mentally and emotionally more stable. I am much better with dealing with stress.

When did you first join Jetts? And why did you decide to join Jetts?
I first joined Jetts in 2009 and the reason I initially joined was the convenience of 24/7 access to a gym, so I could go whenever I had time.

What results have you achieved since being a member at Jetts?

The most beneficial results other than weight loss is that I feel more energetic, I can manage the stress of life much better and all in all I feel healthier. I am also eating much better with the increased knowledge of nutrition and a balanced diet.

Do you remember your first training session? What was it like?

My first training session was very difficult for me to cope with as I was overweight and lacked energy. I was very quickly exhausted and didn’t feel too good about myself.

What has been the most rewarding part of your transformation?

The most rewarding part of my transformation is that not only do I feel and look healthy, but I have also inspired others to also pursue a healthier lifestyle, to exercise and eat well. I have shared my journey with many, especially women my age who are also facing the changes in their bodies, but also who are prone to stress, anxiety and depression.

Why Jetts, what do you love about your local club?

What I love the most about Jetts Nerang is that it’s a very friendly atmosphere. It has never been intimidating to exercise there even when I was much bigger. The team at Jetts Nerang are incredibly helpful and always willing to answer any questions or show me new things I could try. The encouragement from the team only motivates me to go further and improve on both my strength and fitness.

How many times do you hit the gym per week? What type of training do you do?

I try to get to the gym 5 days a week or at least 4 times, depending on my schedule. I do weight/strength training 4 days and 20 minutes of cardio at the end. On the 5th day I do a supersets of abs and then a cardio session.

Who is your motivation?

If there is one person that helps me on the days I am not so motivated it’s my husband.

What do you think has been the key to your success so far?

The key so far for my success has been consistency, no excuses!

What is the number one lesson you’ve learned about health and fitness through your training?

In order to live a healthy life, there are choices we have to make to achieve health and general wellbeing. These choices come down to how we treat our bodies, inside and outside. If we don’t eat right or exercise, we can’t expect to feel strong, healthy and manage life with all its challenges. There are mental hurdles to overcome all the time, but there’s no room for excuses if I want to feel and look good.

What’s your plan of attack now?

I still have some weight to lose (another 6 – 8kg would be nice). I am increasing my cardio intensity and I’m trying to tone up for summer.

What keeps you motivated…you know on those days when you just can’t be bothered getting out of bed?

I’m motivated by the fact that it’s a new day with many opportunities to enjoy life.

What is the best advice you have ever received?

The best advice I received is to breathe and enjoy every moment of my life. I only have one shot at making it work, but when I do it well, once is enough.

Do you have a quote that you live by?

“FREEDOM is being you without anyone’s permission.”

Every person is unique, different and special and by allowing each other to be who we are and placing value on that person, we give them freedom to be and to express themselves.

What advice can you give to others that want to change their life?

If you want to live a healthy life to your old age, to be fit physically and mentally, we have to keep our bodies and minds healthy by eating right and exercising. We can’t expect our bodies and minds to function right, if we put the wrong stuff into our bodies and don’t exercise.

What is the most important thing people need to remember when they start training?

It won’t happen overnight, but it will happen if you are consistent and disciplined to exercise daily. It’s also little steps that will get you there.
